Unlocking Every Child’s Strengths: Inclusion & the Zone of Genius with DJ Stutz - Episode 55

In this episode of The Inclusive Dad Podcast, host AAron welcomes early childhood specialist DJ Stutz to discuss practical ways to foster inclusion. DJ shares her extensive experience teaching and raising children with diverse needs, emphasizing the importance of recognizing each child's "zone of genius." They explore how early exposure to diversity shapes attitudes, strategies for raising confident and independent children, and how parents can advocate for inclusion in schools. DJ also highlights the role of family discussions in building empathy. The conversation reinforces the power of patience, understanding, and proactive support in creating truly inclusive spaces.

Key Takeaways:

Zone of Genius – Every child has unique strengths; identify and nurture them.

Early Inclusion Matters – Younger children naturally include others; adults shape attitudes over time.

Advocacy in Schools – Parents must know IEPs and actively participate in their child's education.

Fostering Independence – Let kids try, fail, and problem-solve to build confidence.

Empathy Through Conversations – Regular family discussions help children understand and support their peers.

DJ’s definition of inclusion:

Inclusion is finding the zone of genius in each one of our kids and then incorporating that into being an important and valued part of our classroom, our society, our family, our neighborhood, whatever that is.
